Library - Lesson 9

Security & Privacy

Create E-Mail
If you do not already have one, setup an E-mail account in your avatar's name (yourSLname@theprovider.com) using one of the free providers such as Yahoo, MSN, Mail.com, hotmail, gmail etc. DO NOT include your personal address and phone. Then set your avatar's account e-mail at Linden to the new E-mail address.

Go to your dashboard

1 Select account >>2 Contact Information
3 Enter your new e-mail >> 4 if you choose, send offline IM to it
SAVE CHANGES and you're done

Number 4 above will insure that if you get capped (you get so much stuff that Linden stops delivery to your avatar), it will still be sent to e-mail where you can review it with all other messages.
Very Important Security Note:
Some people will use this address for their clients to contact them. Please be aware: if you send e-mail back and forth or c

example of info collected and I have it mostly turned off
hat in MSN or Yahoo IM or AIM, you will potentially be allowing others to get your Internet Providers (IP) address. This can then be used to look up your IP address. Simply put, they can find out where you live. Do not allow yourself, or if you are using a computer after work, your employer, to become the victim of an overzealous online relationship.

Note that Photos, Video and Documents such as Word and PDFs, shared across the internet, record the user name of the account who edits the document last. One can simply look in the properties section and see your name (your user account name on your computer). SL software strips out all of this when it converts photos and text to its own system (like a note card). We do not advise you to include a Real Life (RL) photo in your profile at any time. If you feel that you wish to include a photo or nude photo of yourself, then you do so at your own risk. I would advise you to not include your face or haze it out. Stalkers are real and they are scary. The ultimate responsibility is yours, but, we urge you to, please be careful!!!!

Recording your actions makes sense when you are involved in our business…this means learning to take good snapshots, and turning on Chat
and IM logging. This way, if there is a dispute, a log of the event can be retrieved and used to prove out the discussion. Be careful not to misuse the logs or you could find yourself in violation of the TOS.
The attached video shows where to go in preferences to turn on these features.

On a final note, we have provided you with only a tiny bit of all the information available to help you understand The SL Viewer and your SL Skills. There is much, much more to learn, some of it important and much of it just plain interesting. You also need to understand how your SL Viewer works; what the controls do, Camera, Movement, Fly, Inventory, IM, Chat, Voice, Note Cards, Building, Adjusting, Script, Maps, Travel, Environment, Adjusting Preferences, and fine tuning your system for best performance.
